This beautiful Bay is encompassed by Mt Maungatawhiri to the north and Wharekaho headland to the south which is the site of historic Wharetaewa Pa visited by Captain Cook in 1769 and later attacked by northern tribes armed with muskets and all but a few of the inhabitants were slaughtered. Around 2002 Whitianga began a change from a town that almost went into hibernation over the winter months with empty streets (which was great for parking) to what is now quite a busy town with a New World Supermaket and a great variety of other shops and sevices. The catalyst for change was the Waterways Canal Housing project undertaken by Hopper Construction which created many jobs in the town. Continue Reading…
